Solitary parenting and today's family

Over the past two decades single-parent people have become much more common than the so-called " nuclear family" consisting of a mother, father and children. Today we see all sorts of single parent families: advancing by moms, headed by fathers, headed by a grandparent raising their grandchildren. Existence in a single mother or father household - though common - can be quite stressful intended for the adult and the kids. Members may unrealistically expect that the family can function such as a two-parent friends and family, and may feel that something is wrong when it should not. The single mother or father may truly feel overwhelmed by the responsibility of juggling caring for the children, retaining a job and keeping up with the bills and household duties. And commonly, the family's finances and resources will be drastically decreased following the parents' breakup. Solitary parent households deal with various other pressures and potential problem areas that the nuclear family does not have to deal with. Some of these will be:

* Visitation and custody of the children problems;

* The consequence of continuing turmoil between the father and mother; * Much less opportunity for parents and kids to spend time together; 2. Effects of the breakup on children's college performance and peer relations; * Interruptions of extended family relationships;

* Complications caused by the parents' dating and getting into new relationships.

The single parent or guardian can help family members face these difficulties by talking with each other about their feelings and working together to tackle concerns. Support from friends, additional family members as well as the church or synagogue may help too. But if family members continue to be overwhelmed and having problems, it might be time to check with an expert.
