Character Analysis: the narrator (Raymond Carver, " Cathedral”)

The narrator in Raymond Carver's " Cathedral, ” can be portrayed while someone who does not have insight and awareness of the items around him. He is paralyzed, stuck within a destructive way of living. The narrator does not understand the limitations this individual has placed on himself that prevent him from viewing things higher than life.

Carver exposes the narrator's accurate personality by using a first-person narrative. It isn't hard to tell that the narrator is jealous of Robert fantastic wives past relationship. His wife utilized to work for Robert one summertime in Seattle, ten years before, as a " Reading to Blind Man” (299). The girl had to quit when your woman decided to marry her the child years sweetheart on her first matrimony, but Robert and her stayed in touch by sending each other voice tapes through the mail (301). The narrator is making assumptions and criticisms regarding blind people because of his jealousy toward his spouses and Roberts's relationship. You can speculate this because of the pattern the story is usually told in: first the narrator talks about the relationship the blind person and his wife used to have, after which he discusses what he thinks of blind people in general. He claims that his idea of blindness came from the films and that he never met a blind person before (299). The narrator doesn't appear happy in the marriage. His wife demands if her blind friend, Robert, may stay with them because his wife just passed away (299). " If you love me, this can be done for me… and the good friend came to check out, I'd produce him feel relaxed. ” (301). The previous quote shows that the narrator will seem to love and admire his wife as they tries so hard to make Robert comfortable nearby the end from the story. This kind of also shows that his better half loves him too and should have to bother about Robert remaining in their home.

The narrator and Robert choose to watch TV once his better half falls asleep within the couch together (307). That's exactly what realizes how outrageous...
