The narrator in The Color of Water changes to and fro throughout the book between the stage of opinions of Ruth and her son Wayne McBride. This kind of writing style that this individual uses can help you better appreciate how Ruth grew up and how she was raised in comparison to how your woman raised Wayne. They also dealt with a lot of the same personal issues. They both grew up in completely different times and locations but they both equally still were confronted with much of the same daily struggles. Some of the struggles they went through were issues including race, impression of personality, religion, family, grief, and secrets. We'll analyze parallels and contradictions between their lives and give examples and quotes.

Race was one of the biggest issues that both Wayne and Ruth went through within their lives. James had constantly wondered why his mother was a several color compared to the rest of the family members but whenever she would get asked something she would response the question with no giving them the data they actually needed by expressing something like, " I do appear like you. Now i'm your mother” (13), she said that when ever asked simply by James how come she did not look like him or other people in the relatives. Throughout her entire life Ruth never cared about what religious beliefs someone was or the particular color of their particular skin was; all the girl cared regarding was what they were just like as a person. This is shown when she falls in like for the first time and it is a dark-colored man. Despite the fact that Ruth understood her family wouldn't agree with that the lady dated him anyways as they treated her nicely and he did not judge her. James never truly had racism directed at him personally available but having been always conflicted with which part to take. Since a child he thought that the Black Panthers had been out to get his mommy and that they were going to kill her. He was conflicted mainly because all of his peers and neighbors seemed to support the Black Panthers but he thought that this individual couldn't as they wanted his mother to be secure....
